So how did I become a total word nerd?
When I was in high school (9th grade or something) I won a Halloween story contest at the local radio station and I distinctly remember thinking the story didn’t really have an ending when I submitted it.
In high school I went to states for extemporaneous speaking… where I placed last. But I still have the tshirt with my name on it.
I got a perfect score on the writing section of the SAT (You know, the part no one pays attention to when you’re trying to get into college. Do NOT ask about my math score.)
I was the Associate Sports Editor at my college (35,000 students) newspaper where I learned the art of living and breathing by the deadline
I worked on the Virginia Tech Athletic Marketing team and got to spent my college years on the sidelines of sporting events (which is actually a big deal when you go to a football school that went to the National Championship your freshman year)
I have a degree in Public Relations, which is basically spinning absolutely anything into something good. This has come in handy in entrepreneurship.
I got my masters degree because it was a free benefit of working at the university and I didn’t think they paid enough so I figured I’d have them pay me in another way. My thesis was my very first blog which later became my business.
When I quit my job, I spent the first year of entrepreneurship writing random copy for businesses online that sold stuff like widgets on Amazon. (Seriously.)
I moved into marketing consulting when I realized my clients were coming to me for website help, but they didn’t understand basic strategy that their big time business coaches were giving them.
I’ve been the person writing copy for the people you love to follow online. You think they’re writing it. Are they?
I’ve been in business for over 10 years but can’t tell you how many clients I’ve helped or how much money they’ve made because I’m terrible at keeping track of that kind of thing. I’m a word person, not a number person.
